Job Description:

Professor and Chair, Division of Microbiology, TNPRC Location: Covington, LA Open Date: Aug 1, 2018 Description: The Tulane National Primate Research Center (TNPRC) is seeking an accomplished dynamic leader to chair its Division of Microbiology. The Division currently consists of eight faculty with research programs involving AIDS, tuberculosis, varicella virus, emerging infectious diseases and biodefense. Work in these areas includes a focus on viral and bacterial pathogenesis and applying this information to development of vaccines, diagnostics and therapeutics, including host-directed therapeutics. Funding for the Division is approximately $7M for the current year, predominantly from NIH. The Chair of the Division will be given an academic appointment commensurate with their experience. The academic appointment will be in either the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the Tulane University School of Medicine (SOM) or the Department of Tropical Medicine of the Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine (SPHTM). Significant collaborations exist among the TNPRC, SOM and SPHTM which offer unique and highly synergistic resources and opportunities. The academic appointment will allow the Chair to be a part of graduate student programs from either school. The Chair will be a part of the TNPRC Executive Committee and report directly to the TNPRC Director and Chief Scientific Officer, Dr. Jay Rappaport. The new Chair of the Division will have a significant role in the further development of the Division, both in terms of research areas and faculty. An attractive startup package can be negotiated by the new Chair, exclusive of future faculty recruitment. The new Chair of the Division is expected to facilitate growth in research, and foster intra-TNPRC as well as Tulane-wide collaborations, consistent with the mission of Tulane University. The research portfolio and infrastructure of the TNPRC are focused primarily on nonhuman primate models of disease but other animal models are also available. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to existing research programs and to build or bring their own independent research agenda. All necessary resources to assure that the candidate is successful will be provided including ample laboratory and office space and administrative assistance. The TNPRC has excellent infrastructure to support collaborative and independent research using primates. In addition to holding one of the largest colonies of nonhuman primates in the country, the TNPRC houses a large Regional Biosafety Laboratory, to support research under the NIH/NIAID National Biodefense Program. Research resources include extensive BSL2/ABSL2 and BSL3/ABSL3 facilities and highly integrated clinical and laboratory support for studies using nonhuman primates. This includes a full-time staff of clinical veterinarians and technicians and core services including: (1) Anatomic Pathology, (2) Biotelemetry, (3) Cellular Immunology, (4) Clinical Pathology, (5) Confocal Microscopy and Image Analysis, (6) Diagnostic Parasitology, (7) Flow Cytometry, (8) Infectious Disease Aerobiology, (9) Pathogen Detection and Quantification, (10) Vector-Borne Diseases, and tick-borne disease vectors), and (11) Virus Characterization, Isolation and Production. More information is available at the following link http://tulane.edu/tnprc/research/resources. Qualifications: A doctoral degree (PhD, MD, DVM, etc.) with an established research program evidenced by excellent extramural funding and publication records, and the desire to utilize the nonhuman primate resource.
