divisive narratives that perpetuate systemic and interpersonal
racism, cultivating and empowering courageous leaders who are
advancing racial equity and championing transformative policy

the face of COVID-19, this is an important moment for us to
confront the reality that we are divided by design and for us
double down on the hard work of racial equity and uniting our
communities - not just as a question of morality but as an

Pluribus Unum seeks a dynamic and experienced communications expert
to join our growing team as we work to advance racial and economic
equity in the South. The Director of Communications will lead the
organization's communications and content strategy necessary to
advance EPU's leadership, policy change, and narrative change
initiatives. Utilizing various platforms and mediums, the
Communications Director is responsible for overseeing message
development, media relations/press strategy, brand management,
strategic content development, and content distribution. The ideal
candidate will have a demonstrated ability to work on a diverse
team. Successful candidates are fluent in media relations and
strategic communications, and bring an entrepreneurial spirit to
their teams and partners who are working on some of the most
pressing issues of the day. We seek a dynamic individual who can
adeptly lead, is a self-starter and a quick study, and has the
ability to multi-task in fast-paced environments. Successful
candidates will have led communications efforts for non-profits,
political organizations, government agencies, or public relations
firms.ResponsibilitiesWorking closely with EPU's founder,
leadership team, and consultants, the Communications Director
will:* Lead communications strategy and planning, including
creating long-term communications plans, goals, and priorities for
campaigns and initiatives;* Guide the design and implementation of
EPU's public communications strategies, including traditional media
outreach and digital organizing;* Oversee production and
distribution of EPU's marketing and media communications, including
but not limited to media advisories and press releases, social
media, e-blasts and e-newsletters, and additional promotional
materials (e.g. print collateral, videos, etc.);* Identify goals
for media coverage in local, regional, and national outlets, and
cultivate relationships with key media outlets and reporters to
increase EPU's visibility;* Prepare regular reports on EPU's
communications metrics;* Manage other communications and digital
staff to assist in executing day-to-day and strategic priorities;*
Monitor local and national press for relevant stories;* Write media
advisories, talking points, op-eds, quotes, and press statements
for campaigns and initiatives;* Pitch story ideas and provide
information to generate supportive media coverage;* Respond to
inquiries from print, radio, and television journalists;* Build
relationships with beat reporters at key outlets nationally and
across the South;* Prepare and coordinate media opportunities for
staff and key spokespeople;* Speak publicly at events and on the
record with media; and* Set the Communications team's programmatic
budget and monitor progress.Requirements* Bachelor's degree in
areas of Mass Communications, Marketing, Journalism, Political
Science or other relevant fields, preferred;* Minimum of 10 years
of relevant experience working in-house at a public relations or
public affairs agency, political or government office, or an
adjacent organization;* A deep connection to or interest in the
U.S. South;* A deep and broad understanding of race and equity
issues and their impacts, an understanding of key racial equity
principles, and the ability to communicate effectively about these
themes;* Ability to analyze and present data in a clear and concise
manner to share with a public audience;* Excellent writing skills
and experience crafting a variety of communications materials,
including op-eds, press releases, media advisories, Q&A,
talking points, statements, PowerPoints, social media posts and
memos, as well as other communication documents;* Highly organized
and flexible, and is able to juggle multiple tasks;* Ability to
prioritize competing projects and multi-task across teams working
across various offices* A proven track record of developing media
strategies and securing coverage in a wide range of national print
and broadcast outlets;* Strong interpersonal skills and ability to
collaborate effectively with a small but diverse team;* Must be
based in New Orleans or Washington D.C.; some travel required;*
Experience and comfort leading teams, managing multiple
stakeholders, and handling multiple competing deadlines;* Unrivaled
communication and organizational skills that you will leverage to
lead a dynamic and talented team, cultivate a collaborative
atmosphere and move the organization forward; and,* A clear
understanding of social media, creative content, and paid
strategies to accompany communications campaignsLocationThe E
Pluribus Unum team is based in Washington, DC, and New Orleans, LA.
While our team is fully remote during COVID-19, this role is
expected to be based in Washington, DC, or New Orleans once
