Job Description:

Supervise and maintain the department assigned and keep the area ready for any type of inspection at all times. Assist other staff with the completion of the workload and ensure that all procedures are performed, controlled, recorded and reported within in appropriate turn-around-times. Ensure the workflow runs smoothly at all times. Interview staff pertaining to their area of daily operation of the laboratory and in the absence of the director. Will see that the operation of the laboratory is running according to established policies. Write and implement policies and procedures. Ensure competency and training of all staff. Will supervise all medical technologists (medical laboratory scientists), medical laboratory technicians, laboratory assistants, phlebotomists, clerical staff and all other staff on all shifts. Will rotate weekend call as "on call supervisor" and be responsible for all weekend operational concerns. Meets organizational expectations as defined by the Employee Standards of Performance, hospital and department policies and procedures, and the hospital's strategic goals. Verbalizes a clear understanding of continuous quality improvement and customer satisfaction measures and actively participates in improvement initiatives. Performs and teaches bench level tasks in all areas as assigned. Correlates unexpected test results with disease states or applies scientific principle theory of testing procedures to determine the rationale behind unexpected results. Communicates this information to other staff as necessary. Recognizes, identifies and resolves problems and issues that arise. Actively participates in Laboratory Quality Assurance activities with emphasis on assuring compliance with regulatory and accrediting agencies. Maintains and supports computer information systems by entering data, analyzing, verifying, and printing reports. Maintains database, builds tests and ensures that all tests are updated as needed. May be required to be knowledgeable of multiple computer systems within the scope of job responsibilities. Maintains quality control programs and takes appropriate action to resolve and properly document unacceptable values. Communicates instrument or testing concerns, problems to the laboratory director, hospital personnel, and physicians promptly. Maintains inventory control to assure adequate supplies and reagents needed for operations. Actively participates in laboratory and/or hospital committees and activities such as continuing education and customer service teams. Ensures that all staff that work in assigned section are competent and competency is documented and timely. Helps establish and follows departmental operating procedures for quality assurance, quality control, and notification of critical values and completes appropriate documentation. Reviews manuals at least annually and communicates with the medical director and staff on procedure/policy changes. Completes skills check offs and competencies on staff in a timely manner and in accordance with regulatory requirements. Demonstrates ability to multitask and prioritize work to meet needs within established timeframe while experiencing frequent interruptions. Promotes customer service/satisfaction. Attends and participated in departmental staff meetings. Completes mandatory hospital education annually and on time. Addresses conflict in a manner that supports team development. Demonstrates flexibility in scheduling to meet department needs. Able to work continuously with confidential information. Ensures that their assigned department is complies with accrediting guidelines at all times. Ensures supplies are stored in proper locations promptly. Work with biological hazardous materials and other hazardous chemicals. May be required to remain in the hospital during emergencies, such as hurricanes. Color perception must be acceptable. Required: Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical technology with at least 2 years of experience in nonwaived testing in the designated specialty/subspecialty area or alternate and equivalent education and/or experience as set forth by CLIA personnel standards to function as a Technical Consultant and/or Technical Supervisor. Preferred: Previous experience/knowledge of accrediting requirements by such agencies as CAP, AABB, and The Joint Commission. BS degree in Medical Technology from an accredited university. Prefer at least 5 years' experience in the section of responsibility. Professional knowledge of concepts, principles, practices, methodology including routine, complex and infrequently requested analysis. Knowledge of quality control principles and ability to correlate laboratory results. Knowledge and understanding of instrument technology sufficient to monitor mechanical and technical operations and to locate and correct malfunctions. Must be able to make sound decisions and able to communicates information quickly and clearly. Must be able to read, understand, and follow policies, procedures, SDS sheets . Required: Nationally registered by ASCP or equivalent/eligible. Must have a current Louisiana license as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLP.GEN-CLS) or application in progress (temporary permit). Current CPR certification.
