Job Description:
Will collect blood specimens from inpatients and outpatients by
venipuncture or capillary puncture. Provides technical, clerical
and administrative assistance to the laboratory while working under
the direct supervision of licensed personnel. Performs specimen
labeling, handling, preservation, processing or preparation,
transportation and storage. Will perform phlebotomy on patients
according to age specific protocol. Responsible for the prompt and
safe collection of specimens from multiple sources in multiple
locations. Clerical duties include sorting, filing, and use of a
computer on a daily basis. Will answer the phone promptly and
courteously. Will ensure that the highest standards of customer
service are always maintained. Will be a positive representative of
the laboratory to all customers. A positive attitude and a
pleasant, caring image are mandatory. Major Duties: Meets
organizational expectations as defined by the Employee Standards of
Performance, hospital and department policies and procedures, and
the hospital's strategic goals. Verbalizes a clear understanding of
continuous quality improvement and customer satisfaction measures
and actively participates in improvement initiatives. Performs and
teaches phlebotomy skills in area as assigned. Assists with the
timely and efficient completion of workload. Communicates to
customers and coworkers in a positive and clear manner. Actively
participates in Laboratory Quality Assurance activities with
emphasis on assuring compliance with regulatory and accrediting
agencies. Maintains and supports computer information systems by
entering patient data, verifying, and printing reports. Ensures
supplies are stored in proper locations promptly. Actively
participates in laboratory and/or hospital committees and
activities such as continuing education and customer service teams.
Demonstrates ability to multitask and prioritize work to meet needs
within established timeframe while experiencing frequent
interruptions. Promotes customer service/satisfaction. Attends and
participates in departmental staff meetings. Completes mandatory
hospital education annually and on time. Addresses conflict in a
manner that supports team development. Demonstrates flexibility in
scheduling to meet department needs. Able to work continuously with
confidential information. Will go to outside departments and/or
off- main campus locations as assigned to collect specimens for
processing. Will be familiar with safety guidelines both in the
laboratory and in other areas of the hospital where they may be
working and will comply with all regulations concerning universal
precautions, personal protective equipment and safety equipment at
all times. Will be competent in collection of specimens from
patients of all ages. Will be able to communicate clearly and
compassionately with patients, family members, and visitors as
needed. Ability to read and write and transcribe numbers clearly.
Ability to follow instructions and to make sound judgments in the
performance of duties. Able to function in emergency and stressful
situations. Work with biological hazardous materials and other
hazardous chemicals. May be required to remain in the hospital
during emergencies, such as hurricanes. Color perception must be
acceptable. Vision and hearing must be normal or correctable.
Assist with control of cost through judicious use of human and
material resources. Presents a professional image in dress and
demeanor at all times. Adheres to prescribed dress code. Will
answer the phone promptly and support and promote outstanding
customer service. Will maintain a clean and safe environment and
will keep assigned area in the storeroom orderly. Must be able to
be reached by phone or some communication during emergency
situations. Performs other duties as assigned or directed to ensure
smooth operation of the organization.
Education/Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Preferred: Previous
phlebotomy experience with all ages of patients. Graduate of a
phlebotomy program. Previous experience in phlebotomy preferred.
Required: Typing and computer skills. Good organizational skills.
Ability to multitask and prioritize. Medical Terminology. Good
customer relations skills. Good communication/phone skills.
Professional knowledge of concepts, principles, practices,
methodology including routine, complex and infrequently requested
analysis. Must be able to make sound decisions and able to
communicate information quickly and clearly. Must be able to read ,
understand and follow MSDS sheets. High school diploma or
equivalent. Licensure/Certification:
Preferred: Current CPR certification ith louisiana licensure.
