Director Laboratory Services - Health System Louisiana
A financially sound, highly regarded not-for-profit health
system is seeking an experienced Director of Laboratory Services .
Our client is one of the area’s largest and most progressive health
systems. Strategically based between New Orleans and Baton Rouge,
the organization includes a 300 + bed acute care hospital, a Level
II Trauma Center, a medical rehabilitation hospital, a freestanding
surgical center, two diagnostic centers and the largest
multispecialty provider clinic in the region. This is a progressive
and comprehensive testing lab, with 2+ million annual procedures
and over 60 FTE's. The Director will report to the COO of the
system and have responsibility for providing overall operational
leadership, clinical quality, and fiscal stewardship of the
department. The health system uses EPIC as their EMR and clinical
information system, and the laboratory uses SOFT computer

services to all customers (patients, families, physicians, and
employees). Additionally, this position is accountable for
assessing, planning, developing, implementing, and executing
strategies and tactics of the strategic business unit to achieve
cost efficiency, business growth, quality performance, clinical
superiority, and market leadership. A highly competitive,

Below are the Director’s key duties and responsibilities:
Work with hospital administration on planning, organizing, and
directing laboratory operations and ensuring compliance with all
local, state, and federal regulations.
Make daily rounds in Laboratory to judge effectiveness of
operation, utilization of personnel and supplies, and general
ethical and professional atmosphere.
Secure and maintain the physical facilities, equipment and
supplies which are required to carry out effective patient care and
create an optimum physical environment.
Initiate improved methods of services and direct their
Prepare department budgets for personnel, operating expenses,
and capital equipment.
Responsible for the fiscal operation of the department.
Communicate appropriately and clearly to physicians, staff, and
Interact professionally with patient/family.
Consult other departments, as appropriate, to collaborate in
patient care and performance improvement activities.
Establish and maintain standards of performance and ensures
competency and appropriate licensure of personnel.
Direct and participate in the human resource management function
for the department by coordinating the selection, promotion,
orientation, and performance appraisal processes.
Coordinate the department’s in-service training to ensure
competency and ongoing continuing education for all department
Initiate, interpret and enforce Laboratory Services procedures
and maintain and interpret hospital policies and procedures.
Cooperate in planning programs and safety and preparedness for
fire and disaster.
Attend and participates in hospital committees, as
Responsible for the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of
performance improvement and CQI activities.
Responsible for providing 24/7 functionality of Laboratory
Develop and mentor mid-management and supervisors to ensure
effective lab operations.
Follows the Health Systems Compliance Programs and Federal and
State Regulatory guidelines.
Insures department performance and statistical reporting support
compliance measures with The Joint Commission, State, CAP and OSHA
Ensures that lab maintains all appropriate licenses,
certifications, and accreditations. Ensures compliance with CLIA
and OSHA requirements
Qualifications for the ideal candidate for the Director of
Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctoral degree in clinical laboratory
science, medical technology, microbiology, or related scientific
field will be required.
ASCP certification as a Medical Technologist is preferred.
Experience, Knowledge and Skills
Candidate must possess at least five years’ experience in the
medical laboratory setting.
Candidate must have at least three years’ experience in
laboratory management as an Administrator, Director, Assistant
Director, or Manager in a hospital setting.
This individual must have experience in managing all aspects of
laboratory operations and be familiar with Joint Commission, CLIA,
CAP, and related surveys, accreditation, and regulatory
Experience in a laboratory with significant outreach volume.
Ideally, the candidate will have developed operations to
effectively support and grow the outreach volume in a
Experience with Soft Computer (SCC) Lab and Blood Bank software
Experience with Epic electronic health record systems
Experience conducting analysis of new business lines,
automation, and technology for the laboratory.
Experience improving specimen throughput times relating to
collection, processing, and reporting.
Ability to create and maintain positive relationships within
other departments in the hospital.
