PRIMATE II-IV KEEPER POSITION

Audubon Zoo is currently seeking an experienced, motivated, and innovative professional to add to our Primate Team. This is an exciting time for our team, actively managing a newly introduced 1.3 gorilla troop with SSP breeding recommendations and a new 1.4 orangutan group. The ideal candidate will have a strong team work ethic, a willingness to develop in this profession, and a passion for best practice husbandry. The primates under our care consist of a variety of primates from Great Apes to Prosimians. This position will be instrumental in helping the team, the animals, and Audubon Zoo reach their goals.

Primate Keeper responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing high standards of daily animal care, animal observations, animal training and enrichment, monitoring animal health, maintaining cleanliness of animal areas, and minor exhibit modifications
  • Enhancing the animal's lives using creativity and innovation on a daily basis
  • Working with the veterinary department staff to ensure the maintenance of animal health and welfare
  • Conduct general maintenance of grounds and public areas
  • Experience in conducting public presentations, behind-the-scenes VIP tours, and assisting with research and conservation initiatives
  • Assisting with training and mentoring team members
  • Maintaining accurate records
  • Carry out other duties as assigned by supervisor

Requirements:

  • 2 years of animal experience at an AZA institution preferred
  • Experience working with great apes preferred
  • Proven safety record working with primates
  • Proven knowledge and practice with operant conditioning and enrichment
  • Ability and willingness to work in an environment that includes working outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Willing to work weekends, holidays, overtime, and to be flexible to adjust to a roster that suits the teams' needs when needed
  • High standard of organizational and written / oral communication skills
  • Ability to multi-task and work well alone or with others in a team environment
  • Ability to obtain a valid Louisiana driver's license
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs
  • Current (within 6 months) proof of a negative TB test
