Summary:

Supervise assigned laboratory section(s) through managing, planning, servicing, organizing and controlling pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical workflow. Assist the Clinical Manager in coordinating the administrative, fiscal, and technical activities to assure the efficient operation of the clinical laboratory.

Primarily functions as a chemistry supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS

Clinical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Laboratory Technician actively pursuing B.S. CLS degree; with a minimum of 4 years of laboratory experience and at least one of those years in the discipline specific to the laboratory section under supervision. Prefer an individual with previous supervisory experience. CLS/ MLT must earn 12 contact hours (1.2 CEU) of continuing education per year for licensure with the Clinical Laboratory Personnel Committee.

Responsibilities:

Work as an integral part of the laboratory leadership team under the supervision of the Clinical Manager as it pertains to the needs, problems, suggestions and activities of the Laboratory. Duties include, but are not limited to:

General

  • Meet organizational and departmental objectives by maintaining high standards of quality, efficiency, safety, and value.
  • Project a professional image through excellent interpersonal skills and courteous communication with colleagues, other (medical) personnel, patients, and family.
  • Perform technical duties as described in Staff Clinical Laboratory Scientist I/II job description.
  • Maintain appropriate working knowledge of hospital/department computer software and other digital systems, including computer downtime operations.
  • Attend and participate in meetings (administrative, departmental, in-service, etc.) as necessary. Represent the department at conferences and working committees as directed. Meet with nursing and other hospital staff as needed.

6.Maintain professional growth and development through literature, seminars, conferences and professional affiliations.

7.Assist in all aspects of emergency response.May be required to work other shifts, weekends and holidays as assigned.

8.Perform other duties as required or requested by the Director or designee.

Administration / management / leadership

  • Supervise lab operations by developing and maintaining assigned section objectives and services, and assisting with operating and capital budgets and/or related processes.
  • Inform Clinical Manager, Director or designee of problems, activities, needed equipment, materials and personnel. Act as liaison between staff and department management team, hospital administration and medical staff as needed to promote efficient operations. Distribute all pertinent information to staff as received from laboratory management and other hospital departments.
  • Coordinate meetings as directed. Provide and delegate follow up as necessary. Create item agendas and action plans to promote optimal operations of the department. Develop relationships with community agencies, groups, professional affiliations, etc., as appropriate.
  • Pro-actively manage policies and procedures of assigned laboratory section(s); coordinate with medical staff on issues which impact laboratory services.
  • Calculate, record, and coordinate data and all Laboratory functions necessary to maintain and improve overall continuity and efficiency among all Laboratory personnel.
  • Provide counsel and recommendations in the performance and interpretation of Laboratory testing pertaining to assigned section(s).

Inventory and equipment lifecycle

  • Maintain department facilities and equipment in a condition to promote efficiency, health, comfort and safety of patients and staff. Assist in evaluation and justification of equipment and supply needs and purchases, documentation of maintenance schedules, planning for use of space, purchasing new equipment and outside services and implementation of repairs. Approve requisitions for purchase of equipment and supplies within specified guidelines. Coordinate activities of vendors.

16.Ensure efficient utilization of resources. Monitor, analyze and justify expense and revenue within assigned department(s); including but not limited to monitoring and maintaining adequate inventory.

17.Research and stay aware of new instruments and equipment within the Laboratory Science field, to identify and support opportunities for technology improvement and innovation.

Personnel management

  • Assist in recruiting and selection, training/orientation, competency assessment, assignment, guidance and supervision of staff, development of standards of performance and monitoring productivity, and recommendations for personnel actions. Encourage personal and professional development and assist in development and implementation of performance standards. Arrange or conduct in-service education for staff as needed.
  • Plan, develop, coordinate, and oversee section-specific training program for (new) personnel.
  • Directly oversee and manage assigned staff. Direct and supervise staff while maintaining clinical operations as required in the absence of Laboratory Director and/or Clinical Manager.

Quality, safety, and regulatory

  • Implement and maintain Performance Improvement and quality control initiatives. Ensure all laboratory testing methodologies meet the quality assurance parameters mandated by national accrediting agencies and compliance standards.
  • Study, refine and modify established techniques to produce accurate analysis.
  • Assure ongoing compliance with established policies, procedures, professional standards, practices, and requirements of accreditation and regulatory agencies; including but not limited to Quality Assurance/Control, proficiency testing, and patient safety.
  • Ensures all departmental policies and procedures are followed by performing audits as required or assigned.
  • Investigate, monitor and process follow-up on section/department related inquiries/complaints as required or assigned.

26.Follows North Oaks Health System's Compliance Programs and Federal and State Regulatory guidelines.

27.Perform all duties in a safe manner, follow North Oaks Health System's safety policies and procedures, follow the North Oak's Health System Compliance Program, and Federal/ State Regulatory guidelines.
